Cooking Up Progress: Oil-Jacketed Pans Revolutionize Meal Prep at Kuwala.

Food preparation at Kuwala begins before sunrise and continues throughout the day. Providing three meals daily for more than 300 people requires careful planning, dedication, and tremendous effort from the kitchen team. Traditionally, cooks prepared meals in very large stainless-steel pots over biogas burners. While effective, this method often creates uneven heat distribution and hot spots, requiring constant stirring and monitoring — particularly when preparing nsima and fresh farm produce.

Of the 34 students graduating in 2025, 22 have already been accepted to public universities beginning this fall. During the Canadian Board members’ recent visit to Kuwala, we also had the privilege of reconnecting with several members of the 2022 graduating class, who are now thriving in university studies.

In Malawi, most families rely heavily on the rainy season, from October to March, to grow and harvest crops that sustain them throughout the year. These crops are often dried for home consumption and sold to meet household needs. At Kuwala, the farm is working to break free from this seasonal cycle by implementing irrigation systems that enable year-round farming. Thanks to Malawi’s favourable climate, the farm is exploring a diverse range of crops to make the most of these ideal growing conditions.

Dry Season? No Problem. How Our New Irrigation Keeps Kuwala Growing

Just over a year ago, Kuwala began building compost in increasing amounts. What started as a small pile has grown to almost a full acre of land used for compost. The idea for compost originated from the original soil samples, which revealed the soil’s depletion of nutrients and organic matter.
